To Select a Single Scene
Simply
click on the thumbnail of a scene in the Timeline to get it selected. A white box will
appear around the scene and an orange triangle (the Playhead) will
light up above the thumbnail indicating the scene is being selected.
The picture of the selected scene will appear in the Preview
or Compose window depending on the editing mode (TE or SC) you are
in.

For a 'consecutive' selection: while holding down 'Shift' key, click
on the first scene and then the last scene of a range of Timeline that is to be selected. Once selected, all scenes within respective range will be bordered with white boxes.
b)
For a 'nonconsecutive' selection: while holding down 'Ctrl' key
('Command' key on Mac) click on thumbnails of the desired scenes one
by one to have them selected in a nonconsecutive manner.
To Deselect Scene(s)
a)
To deselect an entire selection of scene(s), click on any unselected frame
in the Timeline to have previous selection unselected.
b)
To deselect certain scene(s) from a group selection, while
holding down 'Ctrl' key ('Command' key on Mac), click on unwanted scene(s)
one by one to have them deselected form the group.
Drag-And-Drop
Selection
a)
Using drag-and-drop method, a selection of scene(s) can be moved to a different location, to replace other scene, or to be insert somewhere else in the Timeline. The dropped selection can either replace the scene
at the drop or insert itself between 2 bordered scenes.
b)
A dragged out selection will leave empty scene(s) at its original
location.
c)
A dragged selection would propel the Timeline scrolled to either direction
when it's being butted against the edge of the Timeline strip. So you can drag-and-drop selection to any place in the Timeline so
long as you keep your mouse button pressed.
HINT:
1.
A selection of multiple scenes can include any scene from any place
in a Timeline. You just keep your Ctrl or Shift key pressed while
scrolling the Timeline to search for the scene you want to get selected.
2.
'EMPTY' scene(s) can be selected and deselected just like a normal 'OCCUPIED'
scene.
